Encaustic is an ancient art form made with beeswax, damar resin and pigment. Unlike conventional paint which slowly turns from wet to dry, encaustic paint is heated to a liquid and quickly cools and solidifies as it is painted. It is then fused to the layer below it with a torch or heat gun.
What makes encaustic truly special is its versatility. The pigmented paint can be layered under and on top of clear wax medium to create a luminosity and depth unmatched with other paint types. The wax can also be delicately scraped or intricately carved resulting in a highly textured surface. The luminosity and texture of encaustic paintings invites the viewer to take a closer look and explore the depths of the painting.
